Alternative Uses For a Monopod

There are more uses for a monopod than using it as a monopod. Some things you can do by just using it differently, others require extra parts. What all you may need depends on what you’re doing and what you have.

Steady Cam

One of the uses is a steady cam. I did this a few times before I was given a steady cam and later bought a gimbal. To do this, just collapse the monopod, place the camera on the top, and hold lightly with one hand. You could even add a handle if you have access to a 3D printer.

You could get complicated pretty easily by adding a handle with bearings. A cheap way to make this a little better would be using a mini ball head attached to a flash bracket. You just need a ground clamp to attach the flash bracket to the monopod and a camera handle to hold onto (screwed onto the mini ball head). Loosen the ball head and it will work like a normal steady cam. Depending on the weight of your camera, you may need to add weights with another ground clamp.

Small Jib

If you extend the columns, you just need to tip the monopod forward and back. You can even pick it up and move it in the air to get bigger shots.

Slider/Dolly

Another use for your monopod is a slider or dolly. Obviously, it is not a slider or dolly, but it can achieve a shot similar to what either one of those would get you, but you only get a short movement. All you have to do is follow the instructions for the small jib but turn the camera sideways and move very little.
